Take a tour of the Ship’s Cabin, an exclusive, once-secret room that now serves as home to the Salem Marine Society. Atop the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, these headquarters hold thousands of years of history, tradition, and legacy of many of the country’s oldest seafarers.
The Ship’s Cabin is a stunning replica that boasts an impressive level of detail and authenticity — a massive deck-stepped mast, hurricane lanterns, teak wood panels, Cypress and timber ceilings, brass instrument dials, a prized collection of sextants, an 18th-century wooden voting box, and a member’s book with entries dating back to the Society’s pre-Revolutionary roots. An interior door leads to the “ship’s deck” (technically the hotel roof) and a bird’s-eye view of Derby Wharf, Salem Harbor, and the outlying islands. After a fascinating tour with Society member John Archer, you will be treated to lunch or dinner with views of Salem Common at the historic Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel.
