Changing Seasons

Patterns in Changing Seasons

Overview

In this activity, students will make predictions about what kinds of weather they expect to see, and then will compare it to data they collect at school. Students will be closely looking at the weather every day for one month in order to see if there are any unexpected weather events. This will help students start to realize that our seasons are changing and what we expect to see during a given month might not be what we get.

Objectives:

  • Students will track the weather of each day they are at school

  • Students will make predictions about the weather they expect to see for a month of their choosing

  • Students will compare their original predictions about the season they study to what they actually experienced

Materials

Activity Duration:

  • 5 minutes per day

Instructions:

  1. Preparation Before the Month Begins

Prior to the start of the chosen month, plan to conduct a weather observation project with your class. Organize a quick class discussion where students share their expectations regarding the upcoming month's weather. Encourage them to express what they anticipate seeing, feeling, and experiencing throughout the month.

  2. Making Predictions

Have each student create drawings that represent their predictions for how the upcoming month's weather will look and feel. This can be based on the discussion held in the previous step.

  3. Daily Weather Recording:

For every school day during the chosen month when students are present in class, designate one student each day to record the weather conditions for that day on a blank calendar square. They can either do this outside during recess, on their way into the school, or you can go outside as an entire class to observe and record the weather. You can also use online tools to see how windy, humid, or precipitation amounts.
