If My Friend Moved Away

Objective

In their Change is Simple lesson, students listened to a story about Piper’s friends leaving due to climate change. This made Piper really sad! In this activity, students will talk about how they would feel if their friends moved away. They then will brainstorm ways to stay in touch with friends who are far away.

Materials

  • “If my friend moved away” worksheet

  • Writing materials

  • Coloring materials

Activity Duration:

  • 25-30 minutes

Instructions

  1. Have a 5 minute review with students about how Piper felt when her friend the Snowy Owl moved away because of the warmer winters in our area.

  2. Explain to students that they will be filling out a worksheet to think about how they might feel if one of their friends moved away. They will write a couple sentences about how they would feel and then draw a picture depicting their emotions.

  3. Hand out a worksheet to each student and provide them with writing and coloring materials. Give students 15-20 minutes to work on this.

  4. After students have finished their worksheets, have a 5-10 minute discussion about how we can stay connected to our friends if they ever move away.

  5. Display completed worksheets in the classroom. Students can later take these home!
